Managing Pet Ownership, Returns, and Refunds
Last updated: October 21, 2026
If your pet has gone to a new owner, gone back to the shelter, or you need a refund, the microchip registration has to move across with them too.
Removing a Pet From Your Account
If you're transferring your pet to another owner, contact the organization you adopted from so they can update ownership. For security reasons, new pet owners cannot create an Adopterluv account or initiate the microchip transfer themselves — the transfer must be processed by the original adoption organization (such as a rescue or shelter). Until the transfer is completed, the microchip still points at you, so it is worth checking the contact details on the microchip as well. You can find contact information for the shelter or rescue organization on your original adoption paperwork or on the organization's website.
If you don't have proof of ownership or don't know which organization the pet came from, you can use the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool to find the registry associated with the microchip number. That registry can provide contact information for the organization that originally registered the pet, who can then assist with the ownership transfer process.
If you've returned your pet to the shelter or rescue and the pet still appears in your Adopterluv account, please contact that organization directly. Once they process the return in their system, the update will be reflected in your account.
For new owners: After the organization processes the ownership transfer, log into your Adopterluv account to confirm your details and ensure your contact information is current.

Returns and Refunds
For returning your pet or requesting a refund, contact the shelter or rescue directly. They can guide you through their process and provide details on their refund policy.
