What Microchip Registries Do (and Don’t Do)

Myth: “I don't need to do anything, my microchip is already registered”

Reality: Adopterluv microchips are automatically registered at the time of outcome (adoption, owner reclaim, etc.), but it is your responsibility to ensure your contact information stays current over time.

Here are some examples of when to update your registry profile:

• You move or change addresses

• You get a new phone number or email

Myth: “There's one universal registry everyone uses”

Reality: There are many different registries, and no single one has access to all microchip numbers. That's why it's a good idea to register with more than one, including Adopterluv. To find out which registry currently holds your pet's chip, see checking your pet's registration status.

Myth: “You have to pay every year to stay registered”

Reality: The Adopterluv Registry is free for life. There are no annual fees or renewal requirements.

Myth: “I can only register with the microchip manufacturer's database”

Reality: Most registries allow you to register microchips from any manufacturer. You are not limited to the company that made the microchip.

Myth: “Once it's registered, I'm all set forever”

Reality: Your registry profile needs to be up-to-date. If you move, change your phone number, or update your email, you should log in and make the changes right away.
