Metlife Pet Insurance

MetLife pet insurance covers the surprise vet bills every pet owner eventually has, and if you were sold PetFirst at adoption, that is now MetLife.

How do I cancel my insurance policy, and who do I contact with questions?

Why do I need pet insurance?

  • A small monthly payment can help you prepare for unexpected vet expenses down the road. More than 6 in 10 pet owners said their pet has had an emergency medical expense. 24% of pet parents have credit card or personal loan debt to cover pet health and vet costs. The average annual cost for a routine vet visit is $212 for a dog and $160 for a cat. The average annual cost of a veterinary surgical visit is $426 for a dog and $214 for a cat.

I initially declined insurance coverage, but I have changed my mind. How do I sign up?

  • Anyone who adopted through a shelter using Adopterluv can enroll later, at the same prices you were offered on the day. See your MetLife coverage options for the same coverage options that were offered to you when you adopted.

Additionally, if you got a quote when you adopted but did not buy the policy, you will receive one follow-up email with policy information and the option to purchase. If you have activated your Adopterluv account, you will also see the link listed above in your account if you wish to purchase coverage at a later date or for other pets.

Is there a waiting period before the insurance policy starts?

  • If you purchased coverage during the Shelterpay checkout or via Adopterluv, the standard 14-30-day waiting period is waived. The policy coverage takes effect at midnight on the day of purchase.
