Pet Insurance: How it Works
Last updated: August 28, 2026
Pet insurance helps cover the cost of unexpected vet bills, but it does not cover routine care or anything your pet was already being treated for.
Understanding what is covered before you need it saves a lot of frustration, so if you were offered insurance during your adoption checkout, or you are thinking about it now, this covers how it works and where to find the details for your provider.
Quote or coverage?
Getting a quote is not the same as being insured. A quote is a price; coverage starts only once you complete a purchase and the policy is active. If you are not sure which you have, contact the provider directly.
Waiting periods
Most policies have a waiting period between the day you buy and the day cover begins, so any problem that arises during that window is usually not covered. The length varies by provider and condition, and it is one of the first things to check in your policy documents.
Pre-existing conditions
A pre-existing condition is anything your pet showed signs of before the policy started, whether or not it had been diagnosed. Insurers do not cover these. It is the most common reason a claim is declined, and it is why buying earlier generally gets you more cover rather than less.
Deductibles, premiums, and claims
Your premium is what you pay each month or year to hold the policy.
Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before the insurer starts contributing.
A claim is how you request reimbursement after a vet visit. Most providers want the itemized invoice and the clinical notes.
Most providers let you visit any licensed vet rather than a set list, but confirm that with yours before you need it.
Finding the details for your provider
Each provider answers these questions slightly differently, including how to claim, what is excluded and how to cancel:
Adopterluv does not sell or administer these policies, and we cannot see your policy or your claims. For anything about your own cover, contact the provider using the details in their FAQ above.
Insurance is not the same as microchip registration
They are easy to confuse because both were probably mentioned at adoption. Microchip registration with Adopterluv is free for life and is about getting a lost pet home. Insurance is a separate paid product for vet bills. See registration cost and coverage for what the free registration includes.
Do I really need pet insurance?
Probably! Nearly half of pet parents cannot cover a surprise vet bill, and the average emergency vet visit is $800 to $1,500. That's why pet insurance is valuable. It helps financially protect you from unexpected, pricey vet care for accidents or illnesses and ensures you never have to choose between your budget or your pet's medical needs.
Which veterinarians can I visit?
You can visit any licensed veterinarian of your choice!
