Closing your Adopterluv account

Last updated: August 28, 2026

You can close your Adopterluv account, and this explains how, but it is worth a moment first because most people asking want something else.

Unsubscribing from our emails, removing one pet, or handing a pet to a new owner are all different things, and none of them needs the account closed.

The three things people usually mean

"Stop emailing me." You can unsubscribe from Adopterluv emails without closing anything. The account itself costs nothing and has no renewal, so leaving it open costs you nothing either.

"I want this pet off my account." If a pet was added by mistake or is no longer with you, you can delete that pet from your account. That removes the profile and its records permanently. If your pet has died and you would rather keep their photos and records, you can mark them as deceased instead.

"I rehomed my pet." This is the one that matters most, and closing your account does not accomplish it. A microchip still registered to you cannot reunite your pet with the person who has them now. See transferring your pet to a new owner.

If you do want the account closed

Closing an account is something we do for you rather than a button in your settings. To ask, send us the details here and say you want your account closed. Include the email address on the account and your pet's name so we can find the right record. We answer within one business day.

It is also on our list of who to contact for what, so you are in the right place asking us rather than the shelter you adopted from.

One thing to be clear about before you ask

Closing your account and removing your pet's microchip registration are not the same thing, and closing the account leaves the registration in place.

Your pet stays registered. The chip still points at your contact details, and a vet or shelter scanning your pet can still reach you. Closing the account does not touch any of that.

The registration is what makes the chip work. When a vet or a shelter scans a found pet, the registration is how they know who to call. It is free for life, there is nothing to renew, and it does not require you to log in or do anything at all.

If your pet is still with you, you want the registration to stay exactly where it is - and it will. If you want the registration itself changed, that is a separate request, so say which one you mean when you write to us. If you are not sure, say that too and we will explain the difference for your situation before anything is changed.

If the real problem is that the details on the chip are out of date, that is a five-minute fix and not a reason to close anything. See how to update your contact details.
